Griffin Stadium and Jimmy Lee Football Fields
Fostering health and athletic achievement in youth
Sports and positive recreation promote youth development in many neighborhoods.
James Griffin Stadium, located on the grounds of St. Paul Central High School, is home not only to Central’s teams but to three other St. Paul high schools’ teams, the state’s professional men’s soccer team, a local university’s teams, and city football and women’s soccer teams. In 2003, the stadium was renovated, including the installation of new turf, thanks to a national partnership between LISC and the NFL. Across the street from Central, the athletic fields at Jimmy Lee Recreation Center are being transformed by the same partnership. This longtime gathering place for the youth of St. Paul’s Summit-University neighborhood will get a new field, a practice field, baseball and softball fields, and a children’s play area outside. Indoor facilities will include four gyms, a walking track, fitness rooms, a dance studio, a multipurpose room, a concession area, and exterior restrooms. The reopening date is late 2008.
