The Balmoral and the Barrington

Two aging beauties get face-lifts

A former “crack” building, the renovated Barrington now provides 26 affordable apartments.

The Balmoral had been marred by years of neglect, but redevelopment and landscaping brought it back to life. Fifty-eight rental units were carefully renovated to retain the historical integrity of the original architecture and to provide comfort and affordability to low-income individuals and families. Renovations included refinishing hardwood floors, and installing new kitchens, baths, windows, and light fixtures selected to blend with the early 1900s, when the building was constructed. The remarkable doors on each individual apartment distinguish it, as does the landscaped courtyard, where residents can find a quiet respite from the busy urban streets.

The Barrington, a former condemned “crack” building, was renovated at the request of the Elliot Park Neighborhood Association. The renovation included adding historically accurate windows and trim to better fit in with the historic district. The building now provides 26 one-bedroom and efficiency apartments for low- to moderate-income residents. As requested by the neighborhood, half of the units rent for rates closer to market rate.
