Neighborhood storytellers: New community blogs and journalists

Who better to report neighborhood development news than those who live there? In five Twin Cities communities, residents are signing on as citizen reporters for their new neighborhood blogs—enabling the community to tell its own story and share news that’s important to residents. It’s all part of our comprehensive community development approach.

The Line is buzzing

Financial opportunity centers help families Earn it, Keep it, Grow it

The Centers for Working Families in Minneapolis and St. Paul are two examples of local efforts supported by Twin Cities LISC to help low-income families move up the economic ladder. Last month, the Obama administration gave its first Social Innovation Fund award to national LISC to expand these centers in the metro areas where it works—including the Twin Cities. Great timing, because plans are already under way for a third center on Minneapolis’ North Side.

Real stories, real impact

To understand how comprehensive community development helps people and places prosper, look at the lives of Twin Cities residents who benefit from it. We’ve collected 11 Real Stories from our COACTION grantees that show how their work has helped neighborhood residents find safe, affordable homes; training and jobs; healthy environments and lifestyles; and better futures for themselves and their children.

Over the past year, they’ve successfully undertaken an innovative community-led process to create a healthier neighborhood.
