The Alliance and the Lamoreaux

Apartments for homeless persons near downtown

The Lamoreaux, an award-winning renovation, provides much-needed housing for single adults near downtown Minneapolis

The Alliance, once a vacant and boarded nursing home, was recently transformed into a valuable community asset that provides quality affordable housing for 124 formerly homeless adults in a totally sober community. Located in Elliot Park, the attractive brick structure beautifully complements other buildings in the neighborhood. The first floor contains a bright and welcoming reception area, as well as laundry facilities and a small kitchen. A large community room, a library, and a computer room are available to residents. The apartments offer on-site support groups, self-sufficiency programs, job referral, and other services to foster physical, mental, and spiritual growth.

In the early 1990s, the Lamoreaux was transformed by community developers from a vacant, boarded building into an attractive home for 34 formerly homeless persons. It was recognized with awards from the Minneapolis Heritage Preservation Commission and the City of Minneapolis in 1993. In 2003, a three-story vertical addition to the Lamoreaux added 39 affordable efficiency apartments above the existing single-room occupancy units. The three-story addition was recognized with the “Project of the Year” award from the Minnesota Construction Association in 2004. This project provided critically needed housing to single adults close to downtown Minneapolis, where the current vacancy rate for this type of housing is less than 1%.
