Portland Place/Joe Selvaggio Housing Initiative

Partnerships take on the affordable housing challenge

Portland Place incorporates green space and landscaping.

Portland Place, a new development covering two square blocks in the Phillips neighborhood near Abbott Northwestern Hospital, transformed substandard rental housing into owner-occupied single-family homes, twin homes, and townhomes. The project included adding green space and landscaping, as well as renovating a Victorian home. Portland Place was named a winner of the 2002 Minneapolis Committee on Urban Environment award.

Portland Place is part of a larger partnership between Abbott Northwestern Hospital and the Phillips Partnership that raised $7.5 million to improve 40 multifamily housing units, make exterior improvements to 72 single-family residences, and add new street lighting in an eight-block area west of the hospital. Nearby, the Joe Selvaggio Housing Initiative preserved more than 100 affordable rental homes.
