Improving access to quality education and youth development
Services, education, and recreation are conveniently co-located to serve East Side families.
Comprehensive community development requires new levels of coordination among nontraditional partners. The renovation of the John A. Johnson Achievement Plus Elementary School is a great example. Neighborhood residents and the East Side Neighborhood Development Company played important roles in mobilizing support and assembling four vacant lots to rehabilitate the school and build an attached YMCA. The enlarged school space now includes more classrooms, and both library and cafeteria facilities. The adjoining YMCA provides youth development opportunities, exercise and health education programs, tutoring, adult education, mental health counseling, and family support services.
